Two of the ten diabetic foot commandments — wear white socks without tight elastic, and wear seamless shoes shaped to the foot — sound like preferences. They are not. Each element addresses a specific failure mode that leads to ulcer and amputation.

Why the color of the sock matters

Peripheral neuropathy removes the pain signal that would normally alert a patient to a blister, puncture, or abrasion. Blood or serous drainage on a white or light-colored sock becomes a visual substitute for that missing pain signal. Dark socks hide the same drainage until infection has spread.

Why tight elastic is dangerous
