Granulation tissue is the pink-to-red, bumpy new tissue that fills a wound during the rebuilding stage of healing. Recognizing it — and telling it apart from slough, eschar, or unhealthy overgrowth — is one of the most useful skills for anyone caring for a wound.

What granulation tissue is

After clotting and cleaning, the body lays down a scaffold of new blood vessels and connective tissue inside the wound bed. This scaffold looks:

  • Beefy red or deep pink — a sign of good blood supply.
  • Moist and shiny — never dry or crusted.
  • Slightly bumpy or cobblestoned — from tiny new capillaries.
  • Fragile — it may bleed easily if rubbed.

Healthy granulation is the foundation new skin cells crawl across to close the wound.

Pale or dusky granulation often points to poor perfusion. Dark, friable tissue can suggest infection or biofilm. Overgrown tissue rising above the skin — hypergranulation — can stall epithelialization and needs clinician management.

How granulation fits the wound bed

Clinicians usually describe a wound bed as a percentage mix of tissue types: granulation, slough (yellow, stringy), and necrotic/eschar (black, leathery). Supporting granulation at home

  • Keep the wound moist and covered — dry granulation stalls.
  • Avoid harsh antiseptics that can damage new tissue.
  • Protect from pressure and friction.
  • Eat enough protein and stay hydrated to fuel tissue repair.
